Every August since 2013, we’ve gathered community members of all ages, backgrounds and abilities at our annual ChalkFest to do one simple thing: draw with chalk. Want to draw a stick figure? Great! Want to draw your mom, grandpa or babysitter? Maybe your favorite animal? Wonderful! The beauty of chalk is that it’s universal, it’s relatable, and it’s fun.
This year, ChalkFest takes place 12 – 7 p.m. Thursday, August 9 at the Red River Zoo, proudly sponsored by Gate City Bank. ChalkFest is the largest FREE art-making event in the Metro, and that includes zoo admission!
In addition to free chalk, the day is full of energizing music, fun activities, engagement with local arts groups and more. We also hire local artists to beautify the entrance to the Red River Zoo and inspire your creativity.
To get you in the spirit for ChalkFest, The Arts Partnership and Gate City Bank invite the community to observe public chalk drawings by local artists at various bank locations across Fargo-Moorhead this summer!
The kick-off drawing by artist Britt Dalice takes place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6 at the Gate City Bank headquarters lobby at 500 2nd Avenue North in downtown Fargo. Instead of drawing on the sidewalk, Dalice will draw on a board that will travel to other Gate City Bank locations until ChalkFest. The remaining artists will make chalk drawings on the sidewalk outside each location, barring weather considerations.

The idea for ChalkFest came from one of our former interns, who was tasked with creating an event that would engage her peer group. We hosted the first ChalkFest at Great Northern Bicycle Co. in downtown Fargo in 2013, at Island Park in 2014, and at the Red River Zoo since 2015.
It’s grown exponentially over the years, especially after we invited guests artists Marcus Dunn and Chelsie Liberati from the Savannah College of Art and Design to engage the community with their beautiful chalk drawings in 2016 and 2017. This year we’re activating our own pool of artistic talent in our community, as indicated in the chalk drawing schedule above. Gate City Bank became the signature sponsor of the event in 2017, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their support!
We will update this page as we secure further details about ChalkFest 2018.
