McCabe’s, “Light of the Buddhas: Generating Light in Times of Darkness” is an exhibition on Zen calligraphy. Nancy White, a lay Zen teacher, elaborates, “Just as a photo takes a picture of the external world, Zen calligraphy is a “photo” of the artist’s heart/mind in the moment. The viewer also experiences the heart/mind of the writer either when witnessing its production or seeing the finished work. Zen art to an observer is a kind of medicine for the body and heart/mind. Observers of a work in progress often express feelings of calmness. This is due, in part, to the rhythmic, focused, and deliberate way in which Chinese characters are written.”
“Light of the Buddhas: Generating Light in Times of Darkness” is made possible through the North Dakota Museum of Art’s Rural Arts Initiative and funding in part by North Dakota Council on the Arts and the Arts Partnership.
