Spring on the northern plains is cause for intense celebration, and it does not get more primal and celebratory than the music on the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony’s season finale concert.

The music on this concert starts out with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture, a colorful and exuberant celebration of Orthodox Easter with a definite Russian flair. The atmosphere becomes more folk-like with the swirling, Hungarian-spiced Dances of Galanta by Zoltán Kodály, culminating in Igor Stravinsky’s primal rhythms and exotic sounds that caused audiences at the 1913 Paris premiere of The Rite of Spring to erupt into a riot.

While accounts of the melee vary, certainly Stravinsky’s extraordinary rhythmic textures and Nijinsky’s earthy, peasant-inspired choreography combined for an utterly new experience and heralded the modern age of dance. Despite its inauspicious debut, Stravinsky’s score for The Rite of Spring today stands as a magnificent musical masterpiece of the twentieth century. This will be the first time that the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony has performed this piece, which calls for a larger-than-usual wind section.
