The Spirit Room Hosts Contemplative Creative Writing Retreat

Sometimes we all need to get away, clear our heads and nurture our creativity. Doing so in nature is a plus.

If this sounds like something up your alley, The Spirit Room is hosting its second annual “Luminous Moment, Luminous Word: A Creative Writing and Mindfulness Retreat” August 4 – 6 at the Sheyenne Oaks Campground near Leonard, ND, and the Sheyenne National Grasslands.

At the three-day retreat, attendees can enjoy nature walks, silent time and creative writing sessions that focus on ways “to become more engaged with the natural world by becoming increasingly observant, contemplative and manifestly creative,” The Spirit Room says.

“We encourage people to take little breaks and not feel intensely compelled to be part of every activity,” says Dawn Morgan, the Executive Director of The Spirit Room. “It’s a mindfulness retreat to help you become more aware of yourself, your relationship with yourself, as well as your interactions with other people and the environment.”

Artist-in-Residence Debra Marquardt will lead participants in creative writing prompts and exercises drawn from nature. There will also be numerous other activities throughout the weekend that focus on spiritual meditation and reflection.

If you’re unable to attend the whole retreat, there will be two free events open to the public: a Sheyenne Grasslands nature walk with Ranger Stacey Swenson at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 5 at the Sheyenne Oaks Campground, and a performance by Deb Marquardt at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 6 at the McLeod Historic Schoolhouse.

“This retreat is part of our mission to develop creative, contemplative and healing arts,” Morgan says. “Almost everything we do is experiential, so this retreat is a way to step out of your usual world, your usual patterns and kind of land someplace.”

“Luminous Moment, Luminous Word” is supported with a grant The Spirit Room received from the North Dakota Humanities Council.
