Red River Watercolor Society How To’s of Plein Air Painting

May 13 @ 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Plein air painting is a painting technique where artists create their work outdoors, directly observing the subject, light, and atmosphere. This technique began in the mid 1800’s and has evolved and influenced many influential artists throughout the years. For over 4 years, RRWS members have gathered to paint together at many different locations in the Fargo/Moorhead and surrounding area and have become a network of local plein air artists.

Lisa Burns will be conducting a presentation on May 13, 2025 on the How To’s of Plein Air Painting. You will learn about the basic equipment set up you will need, tips and tricks on a successful painting session and on how to build your skills as an artist.

Lisa Burns is a water media artist residing in rural Minnesota whose subject matter celebrates life in the upper Midwest. Lisa grew up on a farm near Downer, MN and often paints the landscapes, florals and animals that were a significant part of her childhood. Her primary mediums include watercolor, gouache, acrylic, watercolor pencil, and watercolor batik and prefers water-based mediums due to the more challenging and unpredictable nature of the material.

Lisa has served in board and officer positions for Fargo-Moorhead Visual Artists (FMVA) and Red River Watercolor Society (RRWS) and holds current membership Red Door Art Gallery, Art of the Lakes (AOTL), Portrait Society of America (POA), Outdoor Painters of Minnesota (OPM), FMVA, and RRWS. Lisa has also participated in several local art exhibitions and has won several local and regional awards.
