SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:NDSU will launch its first university museum\, which will unify\, catalog and exhibit its diverse collections of more than a million objects and artifacts across campus. \nA launch celebration for the NDSU Museum and Collections\, which is slated to include a reception\, tours to exhibit installations across campus\, student panels and a dedication by NDSU President David Cook\, is scheduled for Tuesday\, Sept. 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Union Gallery. The event will continue Wednesday\, Sept. 18 and Thursday\, Sept. 19 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.\, each day at the Memorial Union Gallery. \n“The establishment of NDSU’s first museum is a once-in-a-career opportunity to support and enrich the campus and region. We are grateful for a large NDSU Foundation grant to bring this idea to reality\, which will undoubtedly have a long-lasting impact on NDSU\,” said Michael Strand\, director of the NDSU School of Design\, Architecture and Art and the principal investigator of the museum project. \nThe museum will be decentralized. Instead of hosting collections in a primary building\, core galleries will exist in the Memorial Union\, an interpretative center in the NDSU Main Library and the new President’s Gallery in Old Main\, among other smaller venues across campus. Other exhibitions and collection spaces will be flexible and dispersed throughout the campus\, offering visitors a variety of guided and self-guided tours\, an updated inventory of collections and comprehensive educational resources. \nA unique feature of the NDSU Museum and Collections will be a collection of portals — modular and adaptable displays containing interpretive information that showcase collections from across campus. Portals can be placed anywhere on campus or with community partners\, offering flexibility and broader reach. \n“The portals can accompany gatherings\, football games or anywhere we want to go as temporary installations or remain long-term. We believe that our museum will be even more dynamic than a static single building as we can be integrated literally anywhere and anytime\,” Strand said. \nThe museum will highlight the university’s extensive collections\, which span areas such as archives\, art\, athletics\, design\, historical objects\, textiles and scientific artifacts\, providing a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration and educational outreach. The museum also will include a website\, which will enhance visibility for the collections and bring more visitors to campus. \nThe NDSU Museum Founding Committee\, which worked for eight months to bring the concept to reality\, is: Strand; Angela Smith\, professor of history and chair of the committee; Nate Wood\, assistant professor of education; Anthony Faris\, curator of the Memorial Union Gallery; Susan Curtis\, Emily Reynolds Historic Costume Collection Curator; Wyatt Atchley\, archivist; Suzzanne Kelley\, editor and chief of the NDSU Press; Jeff Knight\, assistant professor of art & design; and Alexandra Rowe\, assistant director for writing programs and doctoral student in rhetoric. \nThe project launch also includes the work of several NDSU student fellows\, who helped this summer with collection organization\, documentation\, curation\, branding and design. \nThe core committee and fellows have created five portals for the opening that showcase collections from the NDSU Archive\, engineering\, ornithology\, art and dendrochronology. \nThe launch of the NDSU Museum and Collections is funded by a $75\,000 NDSU Foundation Impact grant. Kimberly Wallin\, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences\, and Jolie Graybill\, dean of NDSU Libraries\, are co-principal investigators and played vital roles in the museum’s inception and creation. \nAdditional funding from the NDSU College of Arts and Sciences\, the NDSU School of Design\, Architecture and Art and NDSU Libraries will help the museum host rotating and static displays across campus\, making use of existing public-facing spaces like the Memorial Union Gallery and other key locations. The museum will integrate digital elements like QR codes for interactive learning\, ensuring visitors can engage deeply with the exhibits. \n“Twenty-five years from now this founding group will be able to look back and know they have had a lasting impact on NDSU\, the region and beyond\,” Strand said. \nAs a student-focused\, land-grant\, research university\, we serve our citizens. \n \n

SUMMARY:Amy Sands Artist Talk: Trådar (Threads)
DESCRIPTION:September 7\, 2024 – 2:00 pm\nHjemkomst Center \nAmy Sands provides an artist talk for her exhibit Trådar (Threads). In the Bunad series\, she has captured the close-up images of Norwegian bunad handwork taken at the Osterøy Museum in Norway and translated the images into polymer photogravure black and white prints. The stains\, rips\, and loose threads on the preserved historic textiles become an active component of the work. In the Portal series\, Sands has integrated historical photos from the Tekstilindustrimuseet of the Norwegian textiles industry and patterns from the textile collection at the Osterøy to produce a fish-eye perspective\, embellishing the images with embroidery and beads. The Portal series will be up through March 30\, 2025 and the Bunad series will be up through June 23\, 2025. \nThe talk is free and open to the public. \nThis activity is funded in part by grants from the Lake Region Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and through general operating grants from the FM Area Foundation\, and The Arts Partnership with support from the Cities of Fargo\, Moorhead\, and West Fargo.

SUMMARY:Trådar/Threads
DESCRIPTION:Trådar/Threads is an exhibit by Minnesota artist Amy Sands. It consists of two series of prints. The Bunad series consists of 20 framed polymer photogravure prints of close-ups of historical bunad at the Osterøy Museum in Norway. This series will be on display Sept. 7\, 2024 through June 23\, 2025. The Portal series integrates historical photographs from the Tekstilindustrimuseet and patterns from the textiles collection of the Osterøy Museum\, creating an intersection between handwork and the textile industry. This series will be on exhibit Sept. 7\, 2024 through March 31\, 2025. \nSands will give an exhibit talk on Sept. 7 at 2pm. \nTransforming the photographs into a fish-eye lens perspective and printing them as archival pigment prints on paper transports the viewer back in time\, honoring those who paved the way for the textiles industry. Sands added lace pattern borders sourced from the Osterøy collection that are drawn by hand and embellished with embroidery and beads\, referencing the labor of handiwork as a means of both love and survival\, serving both the family and a means of trade. They were symbols of life at home and became skills that were passed down from generation to generation\, yet through the industrial revolution and invention of machinery\, these skills quickly transformed into a prominent way to earn a living. This series honors and recognizes this labor of love. As Sands states\, “This exhibit draws meaning from the word thread in both a literal sense of the materials explored as well as the symbol of cultural heritage and family.” \nThis activity is funded in part by grants from the Lake Region Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and through general operating grants from the FM Area Foundation\, and The Arts Partnership with support from the Cities of Fargo\, Moorhead\, and West Fargo.

SUMMARY:Plains Art Museum - Artist Talk: Inkpa Mani
DESCRIPTION:Starion Gallery \n\nJoin us for a conversation with Inkpa Mani. Inkpa Mani is an Indigenous\, Mexican/American artist from Minnesota and Chihuahua\, MX. Throughout his work\, he blends modern techniques with traditional Native American aesthetics. Based in rural Minnesota\, Inkpa Mani creates work that celebrates the beauty of the modern Indigenous world. He focuses on art as a cultural continuum passed down in North America for thousands of years.\n\nIn this exhibition\, Inkpa Mani reclaims Indigenous names and self-representation through portraits of himself and his community. There is a longstanding tradition of non-Native artists representing Indigenous people and culture in romanticized and stereotyped ways. Inkpa Mani began painting portraits of people in his community\, because he saw the need for accurate\, everyday representations of Indigenous individuals from an Indigenous artist’s perspective. Each portrait emphasizes the individual’s Indian name to explore the cultural meaning of Indian names and their impact on identity formation. From the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century\, hundreds of Indian boarding schools were established to ‘civilize’ Native children\, which involved forcibly stripping them of their names\, languages\, and cultures. Now there is a growing movement to revitalize Indigenous naming practices. In making Native names a focal point of this series of portraits\, Inkpa Mani resists this erasure and shows us the power of Indian spirit names. \n\nArtist Talk – Thursday\, August 1 – 6-7pm\nInkpa Mani: What’s in a Name? on view through September 22\, 2024
