DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free concert of the finest in hardanger fiddle music from Fargo Spelemannslag\, Bud Larsen of Brainerd\, and special guest Loretta Kelley of Maryland 1pm at the Hjemkomst Center\, 202 1st Ave N. Moorhead. This concert is the culmination of a year-long apprenticeship with master luthier Bud Larsen and Moorhead residents to build their own hardanger fiddles from scratch. The apprenticeship and concert are supported in part by The Arts Partnership with the Cities of Fargo\, Moorhead\, and West Fargo; by the voters of Minnesota through grants from Lake Region Arts Council and MN State Arts Board thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund; the F-M Area Foundation and the Alex Stern Family Foundation. Scandinavian refreshments will be served after. Kick off your holiday season with this fun-filled afternoon.

DESCRIPTION:Of the many carvings I have displayed in my home\, I have one collection that I particularly enjoy. These are carvings that I have from others. It is a pretty small collection\, but I’m looking forward to adding to it. \nCraig McEwen suggested that we have a carving exchange during our December meeting. This is a fun opportunity for our members to share a small carving that they have made. I think this will make a great tradition for our club. \nDon’t forget to check out our club website (rrvwoodcarverrs.org)  If you are on Facebook\, like our page  and join our group Carvers and Friends of the Red River Valley Woodcarvers . Our Facebook page will have announcements and class information. In the group you can post projects\, questions\, inspirations\, or let us know how you are doing.  I would love to see any projects you may be working on.  It’s always fun to follow along and watch works in progress too. \nDecember 2\, 2023\n9:00 am – 4:00 pm – Kolrosing with Tom Dye\n10:30am – Club Meeting \n \nKolrosing is similar to scrimshaw on wood. The origin can be traced back to the Vikings. This old Scandinavian tradition will undoubtedly add to the one of a kind feel to your carvings or tool handles.\n\nThe “Fun with Kolrosing” class will touch on history\, tools\, pattern layout\, theory\, and completion of a personalized bookmark. The class is for all levels of expertise. \nIf you have your own Kolrosing knife GREAT!\, please bring it\, otherwise find a knife which can be easily used cutting 90 degrees to the surface. Ideally a knife with a lot of control\, which typically means the hand grip is closer to the tip of the blade. You will need a burnishing tool as well. Some examples of burnishing tool include but not limited to; smooth antler\, polished stone\, old metal spoon or let’s get creative and try other ideas. Pencil of some kind\, I find mechanical pencils work well. \nThere is no material fee. If you have a project completed and wanted to add Kolrosing we can take a look at those items also. \nCan’t wait to see everyone on December 2nd for “Fun with Kolrosing” \nThe class is $40 for members and $45 for nonmembers. A cheeseburger/hamburger basket is included. You are responsible for your own beverage.\nOnline registration

DESCRIPTION:‘Tis the season for NDSU’s performance of Handel’s Messiah! \nConducted by Dr. Jo Ann Miller\, Baroque Festival Music Director\, over 200 students in five choirs and the Baroque Festival Orchestra will present Handel’s monumental piece\, which has become a holiday tradition throughout the world. Premiered in Dublin\, Ireland in 1742\, Messiah combines Old and New Testament texts in one of the most memorable works of Western music. \nPerformances are at 7:30 PM Nov. 30\, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 at First Lutheran Church in Fargo. DESCRIPTION:The Dakota Brass Quintet was formed in 1984. The Quintet evolved from a group that played at Olivet Lutheran Church to playing free jazz concerts throughout the community\, including at assisted living facilities. \nThe musicians presently include Greg Post (trumpet)\, retired Sanford doctor and administrator; Mike Wavra (trumpet)\, retired from the postal service; Pastor Pete Schiefelbeim (French horn)\, semi-retired from the ministry; Lee Hoffsomer (trombone)\, recently retired physician; Brian Tessmann (tuba)\, retired North High band director; and Gene Okerlund (Euphonium)\, retired music administrator-Fargo Public Schools. Together\, the musicians represent over 300 combined years playing instruments.
