SUMMARY:The Laramie Project Production - Concordia College Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman\nAdvanced Directing Production \nIn October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie\, Wyoming\, Matthew Shepard\, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming\, was tied to a fence post\, severely beaten\, robbed\, tortured\, and left alone to die. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support and died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay.\nThe Tectonic Theater Project\, led by their founder Moisés Kaufman\, traveled to Laramie in the aftermath of the murder with the intent of creating a theatrical portrait of a town coming to grips with hate-fueled violence. Out of the interviews that were conducted\, journal entries\, and found texts\, The Laramie Project was born.

The film’s characters include lifelong friends who must learn to navigate newfound jealousies\, competing desires\, and not-so-friendly competition. Moorhead\, MN filmmaker Janet Haak Brandau wrote\, produced\, and directed this comic look at rural Minnesota living and community ties in a time gone by. \nThis film presentation is free and open to the public and includes a screening of the film followed by a discussion of food\, friendship\, and community. The event will be held at the Moorhead Public Library on April 20 at 2:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served. Come join the conversation! \nJanet Haak Brandau is a fiscal year 2023 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. The Rourke will offer eight one-on-one career consultations with interdisciplinary artist and art career consultant Naomi RaMona Schliesman. Schliesman can advise and guide participating artists with their visual arts/interdisciplinary practices in career development goals\, studio arts\, teaching\, public art\, creative placemaking\, grant writing\, call for art applications\, arts advocacy\, arts administration and residencies\, and fellowship applications. \nSchliesman has been an Art Career Consultant for over 8 years and has worked with artists and organizations across the nation. This one-on-one consultation is one hour dedicated to your needs\, whether you are looking to plan for the next 3-5 years to become a full-time artist\, start your art business\, plan out new goals with action steps\, or apply for art calls and residencies/fellowships. Consultations will be held in-person at The Rourke Art Gallery + Museum where you will meet with Naomi for a full hour. Intake forms will be provided to fill out before your consultation to best serve your particular goals and needs. \nThese limited in-person consultations are being offered at a special rate of $75 and can be written off as a business expense for your 2024 taxes. Sign up for your spot today as there are limited spots available at this special rate. \nAbout Your Consultant:\nNaomi RaMona Schliesman is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist with over 25 years of experience. She has exhibited her work in New York\, Chicago\, Minneapolis/St. Paul\, Pittsburg\, Brooklyn\, Seattle\, and across the Midwest. She received an MFA degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2009) and a BFA degree with an emphasis in sculpture from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Schliesman has received a Fellowship from Ragdale and Kimmel Hardening Nelson Center for the Arts\, was awarded 2nd place for Miami University Young Sculptors Competition for William and Dorothy Yeck Award\, and was a LEAP finalist for the Society of Contemporary Craft Award. She was selected by Smart Growth America\, Forecast Public Art\, and West Central Initiative to create a reusable community engagement kit consisting of both virtual and physical tools to be implemented in West Central MN. She was selected to be one of two Artist Organizers for a project mentoring youth in Otter Tail County for the development of the multimedia exhibit “Return to Normal? COVID Diaries from Local Youth” funded by CDC Foundation in partnership with Springboard for the Arts\, Otter Tail County Historical Society\, and the Otter Tail County Public Health Department. She has traveled abroad to Italy\, Scotland\, Ireland\, France\, United Kingdom\, Netherlands and Belize to study art movements and has done artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center\, Kimmel Hardening Nelson Center for the Arts\, Ragadale\, The Traveling Museum\, and Hospitalfield Arts. \nSchliesman taught 2D and 3D Design and was the Gallery Director for the School of Arts at Minnesota State University Moorhead from 2011- 2013. She was the Artist Development Director for rural programing at Springboard for the Arts in the Fergus Falls\, MN\, from 2013-2020\, where she managed the Hinge Arts at the Kirkbride residency program\, facilitated the Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists workshops\, Artist Development panels\, and mentored artists across the United States through one-on-one Artist Career Consultations. Schliesman currently serves on the Fergus Falls Public Library Arts Advisory Committee and the MinneShowta Board. She resides in rural MN with her daughter and continues her studio art practice and freelance work. She is a contracted Artist Career Consultant and Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists facilitator for Springboard for the Arts\, a teaching Artist for Kaddatz Galleries\, and the Gallery Curator and Arts Calendar Editor at Lake Region Arts Council.
