SUMMARY:Bas Relief Sculpting with Daphne Clark
DESCRIPTION:About this trip\nIn this hands-on class\, students will learn the art of bas-relief sculpture\, an ancient technique where images modeled and sculpted onto a flat surface to create a three-dimensional effect. Throughout the class\, students will explore the principles of composition\, depth\, and shadowing to make their sculptures come to life. The instructor will guide students through each stage\, from initial design and concept to refining and finishing their pieces. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced artist\, this class is designed to inspire creativity and build a strong foundation for creating bas reliefs. By the end of the course\, students will have a finished bas-relief artwork and a deep understanding of this beautiful sculptural technique. \nDaphne Clark\nDaphne was raised in rural North Dakota\, near the Montana border\, where she spent much of \nher adolescence at her grandparent’s ranch; chasing cows\, building fences\, milking cows and \nhelping check for spring calves. She has always loved to be outside enjoying the nature that \nNorth Dakota and Montana have to offer. \nIn 2012\, Daphne enrolled at the Academy of Art University to pursue a Master’s in Fine Art. It \nwas a natural fit to bring together her background and love for ranching and the outdoors into\nher art. Daphne believes there is a story in these rural areas just waiting to be told to the rest of \nthe world and she wants to tell that story through her paintings and sculptures.

SUMMARY:Lecture—Amherst is Paradise: Emily Dickinson’s Place of Sense\, with Sheila Coghill and Thom Tammaro
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Sunday salon with MSUM professors emeriti Sheila Coghill and Thom Tammaro to hear more about the muse and spark point of this year’s Midwestern theme (To Make a Prairie: Meditations on Poetry\, Ecology\, and Place): Emily Dickinson. \nAbout the lecture:\nIs Emily Dickinson more—or less—than the sixteen-year-old whose 1847 daguerreotype image has burned itself in our consciousness and memory for more than a century and a quarter? Why did she rarely leave her birth place of Amherst\, Massachusetts? Where was Dickinson most at home? Where were her sacred spaces? These are a few of the questions Coghill and Tammaro will contemplate in their presentation\, “Amherst is Paradise: Emily Dickinson’s Place of Sense.” \nAbout your lecturers:\nSheila Coghill and Thom Tammaro\, emeriti professors of English from Minnesota State University Moorhead\, are the editors of Visiting Emily: Poems Inspired by the Life and Work of Emily Dickinson\, recipient of a 2001 Minnesota Book Award and a 2001 AAUP Book\, Jacket\, and Journal award for design and production.\nTogether\, they also edited companion “Visiting” anthologies about Walt Whitman\, Robert Frost\, and William Carlos Williams—all published by the University of Iowa Press. They reside in Moorhead.

SUMMARY:THE GUYS presented by Stage West
DESCRIPTION:Less than two weeks after the September 11th attacks\, New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them\, an editor named Joan\, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick\, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He’s looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together\, recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles\, and fashioning the stories into memorials of words. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief\, they draw on humor\, tango\, the appreciation of craft in all its forms—and the enduring bonds of common humanity. THE GUYS is based on a true story. \nTHE GUYS will be presented in a readers theatre format (limited staging\, scripts in hand). “Pay-What-You-Will” tickets go on sale Monday\, August 25th with a suggested donation of $10.
