Hot Club of San Francisco

MSUM’s Gaede Stage
Tickets: $28 for adults, $24 for seniors and $12 for students with student ID.
Gypsy jazz, made famous by guitarist/composer Django Reinhardt, jazz is pure ear-grabbing joy. Its jaunty rhythms, elegant timbres, and devilishly intricate melodies add up to something both classic and modern. Timeless, even. It’s complex, moody, romantic, and indescribably French.
And Hot Club of San Francisco does it like nobody’s business. Formed in the mid-90s by guitarist Paul Mehling (who also spent time playing in a band with American Gypsy jazz icon Dan Hicks), HCSF has put together nine albums and toured extensively through a period of renewed interest in the music of Reinhardt. In 2000, they were the first American band to be invited to play in the Festival de Jazz Django Reinhardt in Samois-Sur-Seine. And just check out the video above. Serious chops.
HCSF’s upcoming show at Gaede Stage is the second in MSUM’s performing arts series, which continues to pull in high-quality, cutting-edge musical groups.
