Green (Fog) with Envy: Hitchcock and the Erotic

6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday 26 March 2026
Join Dr. Gregory Carlson as he engages in lively conversation with his colleague Dr. Richard Gilmore, author of the book “Hitchcock as Philosopher of the Erotic.”
The professors will discuss Gilmore’s concept of the erotic spark in several popular movies from the Master of Suspense, including the 1958 masterpiece “Vertigo,” starring James Stewart and Kim Novak.
Gilmore postulates that for Hitchcock, the notion of the erotic is a process of mutual, reciprocal creation of the personality of the other person. Longtime cinephiles Carlson and Gilmore both teach in the interdisciplinary film studies program at Concordia College.
The evening will begin with a reception and refreshments with Drs. Carlson and Gilmore’s lecture to follow at 6:30 p.m. Free and open to the public.
This lecture will be live-streamed on Facebook and available for playback next week on The Rourke’s YouTube channel.
